About Sunyata Freediving

Discover the Magic of Freediving

We invite you to dive into the profound essence of 'Sunyata,' a term that encapsulates the spirit of openness, freedom, and interconnectedness. Derived from ancient wisdom, Sunyata represents a state of emptiness, a void, where the boundaries between self and the vast universe dissolve, inviting a sense of deep tranquility and oneness.

The philosophy of Sunyata seamlessly blends with the art of freediving as the emptiness and interconnectedness emphasized in Sunyata are mirrored by the boundless expanse of the underwater world, our consciousness, and the freediver's intimate journey into these unknowns.

Immersed in the Serenity of the Golfo Dulce

Nestled amidst the serene beauty of the Golfo Dulce in Costa Rica's majestic Osa Peninsula, Sunyata Freediving transcends conventional boundaries. Our mission invites curious soul seekers to embark on a transformative journey, celebrating the ocean's vastness, our interconnected consciousness, the freedom of connection, and the serene tranquility inherent in this breathtaking natural haven.

Join us at Sunyata Freediving, where the meaning of Sunyata comes to life, and the depths of both the ocean and your inner self await exploration.

Meet Your Instructor

Chris Hanhimaki

Chris embodies a blend of technical expertise, deep presence, and genuine reverence for the ocean. His journey with freediving is not just professional — it is profoundly personal.

After years of disconnection, inner turmoil, and struggles with substance abuse, it was the ocean that became his teacher. Through breath, depth, and stillness, freediving offered him a path back to himself.

Chris

In the water, Chris learned to slow down, to listen, and to meet discomfort with calm rather than escape. What began as a sport gradually became a form of meditation — one that helped him release old patterns, heal unresolved trauma, and cultivate a more centered, grounded way of living. That transformation now lives at the heart of everything he shares.

As an instructor, Chris is known for his patience, warmth, and intuitive teaching style. He guides students beyond technique alone, helping them build trust with their breath, their bodies, and the ocean itself — always with safety, respect, and curiosity at the forefront. His approach creates space for growth not just as divers, but as humans.

More than an instructor, Chris is a mentor and guide, inviting others into a deeper relationship with the water — one that fosters presence, resilience, and a lasting sense of connection long after the retreat ends.
